STARTING OF THE 2009-2010 SEASON OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT!!!

Welcome to a new season of women’s wrestling.  We are working and planning early so that we can have a much more successful year for the Kansas Krusaders. 2008-2009 was a down year for many things, wrestling was no exception.  We did have some highs though…Kansas was well represented at 5 major tournaments last year.  Here are some of the highlights. Iowa Preseason Nationals for HS – Krista Revelle won this tournament and was named Outstanding Wrestler in Women’s Division.  Jessica Bowman placed 3rd.

Once again Kansas Krusaders and the McPherson wrestling family put on the USAW-KS State Tournament and the USGWA KS State Tournament.  Both were well attended and the results are posted on the website. USGWA Nationals in Detroit was attended and won by Krista Revelle and Samantha Lynch competed. Oklahoma City University was once again the home of the USAW Girls National Folkstyle Tournament and it has continued to grow.  We had a great showing there, even though there was terrible weather and some were unable to make the trip.  Krista Revelle placed 3rd, Ashley Johnson paced 7th, and Taylor Fredrikson placed 8th. All these girls were All Americans in folkstyle.

Then we traveled to the USAW Body Bar FS Nationals in Colorado Springs and we had a nice representation.  Krista Revelle dominated the competition after her one loss at OKC and won that tournament and received Outstanding Wrestler award once again.  Others that competed were Trish Young who placed 6th, and Jessica Bowman placed 5th. Then the premier HS tournament that we hope everyone plans, hopes, dreams and prepares for…Fargo ND.  It should be every female wrestlers plan to attend this tournament in HS.  We had a very down year for Fargo.  We were plagued by financial problems, injuries and overall decreased numbers.  We did take Krista Revelle and Samantha Lynch and they represented KS well.  Samantha was unfortunately injured in battle and was unable to finish the tournament.  She is healed now though and will return to wrestle again.

Krista Revelle got 5th at Fargo which was probably somewhat disappointing for her, but none the less an incredible feat for a freshman.   It should also be mentioned that at Body Bar Nationals Krista Revelle qualified for the Cadet World team and traveled with them to Nicaragua….and WON that tournament also!!!!!!!!!!!  The USA Team won the gold as well.  Quite an exciting time for Kansas Women’s Wrestling.  This can be a goal for many of our wrestlers but it takes hard work, practice and travel to the right tournaments. We also need to point out that we were unable to present a dual team for KS this year due to the lack of participation by our girls.  This was quite disappointing as we took 4th in the Nation the year before.  We want to have a dual team in 2010! NOW IT IS TIME TO REFRESH, REFUEL AND REFIRE UP!!!!!!!!!!  We need to get KS Women’s Wrestling back on the radar.

Coach Ed and Coach Brooke have been working hard to put together a proposal to start working forward in getting all girls wrestling in the MS and HS arenas.  They have already made presentations to the Head AD in USD 259 in Wichita and then progressed to the Board of the Greater Wichita Area League and seems to be gaining support for the idea.  They are on the agenda to speak at the KWCA meeting in November.  This will begin the process of presenting girl on girl wrestling to the coaches and AD’s from all around the state.  Many influential people will be at this meeting.  So stay tuned for further developments.  If any of you would like to get more involved…do not hesitate to contact Coach Ed or Coach Brooke to help.

With all that said, we as coaches and leaders of the Kansas Krusaders, want you to know that we realize that times are hard and money is tight.  It is difficult to choose wrestling, first because of the intensity of the sport, and then you add in the cost and it can become overwhelming, at times secondary to the cost.  We want to try and make that easier for you this year.  We are proposing that we pick a variety of different fund raisers, starting now, to build up an account for each girl wrestler that chooses to participate, so that you can start now to build up the money you will need to attend tournaments. One of the ideas to raise money is to work the Southern Plains Tournament which is one the first weekend in June.  We are looking for ideas and assistance in getting these fund raisers going.   No idea is too big or too small. We are putting together a package that will assist you in attending the OKC Folkstyle Nationals, Body Bar Freestyle Nationals and Fargo Jr Freestyle Nationals.  These three tournaments will give you the notoriety, exposure and experience that is necessary to get recognized for college scholarships in women’s wrestling. We figure we can get you to all three tournaments and take care of all expenses for $1000 per athlete.  It is possible that they may move the Jr. Duals for next year.  This could add on $200 more if it is moved away from Fargo.  We will figure that into the plan as we hear dates for next year.  If we could get this money raised ahead of time, it would take away a lot of stress for the rest of the season, so you could work on practicing and preparing to excel.  We are not saying that WE are going to raise the money FOR you.  You are going to pick the fund raisers that work for you and you are going to work them to your advantage.  We will hold your money in an account for you and you will use your money to pay your wrestling expenses.  The more you earn, the more you can do. We will be holding practices, at least two a month, at different locations in the state.  IF you want to have practice at your wrestling room, we would love to bring the practice to you.  You need to get a confirmation on the dates your room is available and we need to have at least 10 girls that are able to get to your location.  If you think you have this ability, email Ms Jenni at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  and she will help you get it set up.

Practices will begin in October.  There are plans for a preseason Wichita Classic.  This will be in early November before the HS season starts.  They did remove the girls division from the Iowa Preseason Nationals.  You need to note, if they make girls tournaments and the girls don’t show up….they will stop having girls brackets at the tournaments.  It is usually men running the tournaments and most are not that convinced about girls wrestling anyway and if they put their time into the tournament and only a handful of girls show up then the opportunities will begin to stop. Your talents and abilities are God’s gift to you…how you choose to use those talents and abilities are YOUR gift to God.  How are you going to use your gifts?

Yours in Wrestling,
